Some also believe Albright's pet cockatoo, Sweet Pea, might understand what she's saying. She added that a parrot she'd studied for 30 years, an African Grey Parrot named Alex, learned to identify 50 objects, seven colors, six shapes and quantities up to eight in its lifetime. "Parrots who talk know what they're saying if they are taught appropriately," Pepperberg told the National Audubon Society. New Mexico State University's Tim Wright believes pet parrots don't fully understand what they say. So, when placed into a human household, a parrot will "try to integrate itself into the situation as though the people were its flock members," Pepperberg said.
